Protest against the attack on benefits

Friday 21 March 2pm – Ian Murray MP’s office

31 Minto Street Edinburgh EH9 2BT

#WelfareNotWarfare

Join us to tackle the assault on social security benefits. The Starmer state is increasingly attacking the poor, to enrich the rich. The attack on benefits undermines all workers’ wages and conditions. We will not tolerate this!

We are taking part in a joint, UK wide day of action against the far-right Labour government and its vicious assault against fellow poor people.

Do join us – action needed !

Demands

End the Racist policy of ‘no recourse to public funds’.

Currently, migrants often have to pay American style charges (tens of thousands of pounds) basic for NHS hospital treatments. Many migrants are also denied access to basic benefits such as disability payments, and universal credit. This forces migrants to accept lower wages in order to survive, lowering wages. This makes poor people poorer and corporate bosses richer.

Scrap the benefits cap.

The benefits cap is a limit to the amount of benefits someone can receive. This has forced many innocent people into poverty. The benefits of a single person living outside London are restricted to under £15,000 per year; and £11,000 for members of a couple.

Scrap the two Child benefit limit

The cap on child benefits means that families receive no additional universal credit benefits for their third child, onwards. CPAG estimates that removing this cap would lift 300’000 children out of poverty.

Scrap the ‘Anti-Fraud’ bill.

The UK government is currently passing a bill which allows the DWP to spy on benefit claimants’ bank accounts. It also allows the government to directly deduct up to 40% of someone’s pay or bank account savings  to recover benefits which have been overpaid due to administrative accidents. These fines can be issued without any kind of trial. We want this bill Scrapped!

Benefits not Bombs.

The UK cannot afford a rise in military spending, without taxing the rich. Why should we spend millions killing children in the Middle East, when children here are going hungry?

Resist the attacks on the sick and disabled.

The government is threatening cruel measures like

– Freezing PIP and making it much more difficult to qualify for PIP
– Cutting benefit for the most sick claimants on Universal Credit, by abolishing the additional payment for those ” not fit to carry out work – related activity”
– Making it even more difficult to be found not fit for work
